Night of the Lions - Kuki Gallmann

If you've read 'I Dreamed of Africa' (or even just seen the film) there will be some sequences in this book of Kuki's Kenyan recollections that will be familiar. There are some interesting things in this book - fruits of a lifetime's concentrated learning and an intimate love affair with Kenya and its rural and bush life. I read this during a month in the field in Uganda's national parks and it might be true that the Kenyan atmosphere in this book was brought alive in part by the periods of interruption when I stopped to listen to lions roaring outside the rooftop tent on my Land Rover.
I made a swap for this book at Lake Albert Lodge, on the shores of Lake Albert and read it as I travelled north through Murchison Falls and up to Kidepo, on the Sudan border. I left it as a travel offering at Upperhill Campsite in Nairobi. Hope it manages some more mileage from there!
