My Other Life – Paul Theroux

This book was given to me by the owner of Rio Chirripo Mountain Retreat (http://www.riochirripo.com/) in Costa Rica. Thanks Frank! I started reading it in Guatemala and - despite the fact that it is hard to put down - it lasted me through to Mexico City and I finally finished reading it back home in Spain. It is said to be a novel and Theroux makes no claim that there is much of the autobiography in it at all. However, any regular readers of Theroux (either his great travel books or - to my mind - his even better novels) will recognise so much in it that you would have to guess that it is at least 80% autobiography. But a life like Paul Theroux's is always sure to be engrossing anyway and it might even be said that some of the real situations he has been in might actually be MORE bizarre than any fiction! A great book and a perfect travelling read.
- I left this book at the beach in Zarautz, Basque Country, Spain...hope a Theroux fan picked it up and helped it on its way!
